The arrest of Luis Mijangos comes after a two-year investigation by the FBI's cyber squad. Federal authorities say that the suspect hacked into hundreds of computers to extract data that included sexual pictures and inappropriate material. He would later threaten his victims to send sexual videos to him, saying that if they did not comply, then he would release the sexual pictures he had to people that they knew. One alleged victim claimed that the suspect threatened to show a nude picture to her family if she didn't send him a pornographic video.
Extortion is a felony offense at the federal level that carries a maximum of two years in federal prison. It's unclear if the suspect will be facing additional charges, but he'll definitely need a criminal defense attorney at this point so that his legal rights can be protected. He reportedly cannot be released from jail on bail because he is suspected of being an illegal immigrant and authorities feel there's a possibility that he could flee the country. A Los Angeles criminal defense attorney might be able to negotiate an agreement in a situation like this. Luis Mijangos will be appearing in Los Angeles federal court on July 13 for a preliminary hearing and has his arraignment set for July 19.
