Arraignment Postponed in Grim Sleeper Case

Lonnie David Franklin Jr. had originally been expected to answer charges against him at an arraignment in a Los Angeles courtroom on Tuesday, but the hearing has now been postponed until August 23. The Los Angeles Times reports that the suspect has been charged with killing over 10 women over a period spanning more than two decades, with most of the alleged murders occurring in the South Los Angeles area.

The suspect has been labeled the "Grim Sleeper" serial killer for his 13 year break between the killing sprees. Because Lonnie Franklin Jr. could be facing the death penalty if convicted of the murder charges, it's important for him to have a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney representing him in the criminal case so that all of his legal rights can be protected during the trial.

Deputy Alternate Public Defender Richard L. Sternfeld was appointed at the defendant's new lawyer in the case. The lawyer argued that cameras should not be allowed in the courtroom, due to the ongoing investigation of the defendant for additional murders. However, Superior Court Judge Hilleri G. Merritt reportedly rejected this argument.

Meanwhile, the suspect has been held without bail since his arrest on July 7. The man's arrest was quite shocking to some people in the Los Angeles community because the suspect's neighbors said that they knew him as a friendly and quiet guy. Lonnie Franklin Jr. also used to work for the Los Angeles Police Department as a mechanic in the 77th Street Division.
