A Los Angeles criminal defense attorney doesn't always have to cost the defendant a great deal of money. Lonnie Franklin, who has been accused of being the "Grim Sleeper" serial killer was appointed a new attorney in a Los Angeles courtroom yesterday, who says that she will work for free.
KTLA News reports that the new lawyer is Louisa Pensanti has had experience handling multiple murder cases and has agreed to work pro bono on the Grim Sleeper case. As we reported in an earlier blog post, Lonnie Franklin's arraignment has been postponed until August 23. The man has been charged with 10 counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
If convicted of the murder charges, the Grim Sleeper can face the death penalty. Because of the severity of murder cases, it's always important to have a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney help the defendant by ensuring that his or her rights are legally protected.
The Grim Sleeper suspect in this case has been held without bail since he was arrested on July 7 in his South Los Angeles home. The man's arrest came after DNA evidence linked him to the 10 murders. Investigators say they're trying to tie the suspect, who used to work as an auto mechanic for the Los Angeles Police Department, to dozens more murders in the Los Angeles area.
Lonnie Franklin's murder came as a shock to some people in the South Los Angeles community because neighbors of the suspect said that they knew the man as friendly and quiet guy. With a new attorney by his side, we'll be able to see how the Lonnie Franklin plans on defending himself.
